2016 BMW 2 Series Coupe Reviews - The four-cylinder diesel engines have enough performance for most situations. The 220d has 181bhp, for example, and can reach 62mph from rest in around 7.0 seconds. The range-topping M235i is sports-car fast. BMW's eight-speed automatic gearbox (optional on most models and standard on the 225d) is excellent; shifts are rapid and smooth, and it kicks down a gear exactly when you want it to. The six-speed manual ’box, on the other hand, is notchy between first and second gears.
The 2 Series is set up predominantly for safety, so if you enter a corner too quickly, the front tyres are more likely to run wide of your chosen line than the car is to snap sideways and catch you out. The steering is light enough and pleasingly direct, and the 2 Series rides comfortably on British roads; in fact, even the sporty M235i is surprisingly supple over poorer surfaces.
BMW’s four-cylinder diesel engines have a good reputation for efficiency, but they're less impressive when it comes to refinement – and the 2 Series is no exception. The one in the 220d settles down a bit once it's warmed up, but it's too noisy generally and you feel too much vibration through the pedals and gearknob. The petrol unit in the M235i makes a great noise when you want it to, but fades away when cruising. There's a fair amount of wind noise from around the front pillars on all models.
